About the Handy Craftsman

Background

I have been a handyman nearly all my life.  My experience working as an engineer, high school teacher, coach, custom woodworker, and project manager have prepared me to diagnose and repair just about anything in your home.

I was born and raised in Ohio.  After graduating from college I spent 5 months hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.   Upon completing the hike, I realized that I needed to live near the mountains, so my westward migration began.  After brief stops in Missouri and Colorado, I arrived in Fairbanks, Alaska, where I taught high school math, coached cross country and track, then owned and operated a custom woodworking business for 4 years.

After spending 13 years in Alaska, it was time to move south to milder winters, so my wife and I chose Bend, Oregon, as our new home in 2013.  My Bend career started as the lead craftsman and production manager for a unique custom furniture shop and working as a project manager for a custom cabinet company.  The desire to run my own business again was so strong that I ventured out on my own to start The Handy Craftsman.

When I'm not fixing problems in your home, you can usually find me hiking on the trails in the mountains with my wife, snowboarding, nordic skiing, fat biking, fly fishing, paddling on the Deschutes River, or riding my gravel bike.
